33 inches x 43 inches
100 % hand marbled and dyed cottons
Machine pieced, hand applique and quilted
I first started piecing compass quilts in the late 1980's and fell in love with the curved design. The compass pattern is not for the beginner sewer but with paper piecing can be accomplished easily with a bit of practice. The above quilt is a combination of a precisely pieced nearly completed compass and a fabric collage of marble and dyed cottons. The imagination plays with the colors and many different ideas come to mind when I view this piece. Free form machine quilting was used with no single quilting motif used. The binding is a continuation of the design so that the compass can seem to float in the upper corner of the quilt.
This piece answers in me the precise and also the chaos so is often experienced in life. Trying to balance the logical and intuitive mind is the joy of becoming whole.
