Davids t shirt quilt
David's T Shirts
59"h x 48"w
Machine pieced and quilted.
This is the first quilt I made in the series and also the hardest. I must have arranged the prints from the shirts on my design wall for at least a month trying to figure out the best placement. I experimented with numerous fabrics and settings before finally settling on this simple approach. The blue fabric sewn around many of the t shirt prints was from a blue oxford cloth shirt of Davids. The other blue fabric I bought and I tried to capture with it both the sense of sky and water. David enjoyed taking his mom and sister sailing in his catamaran. In fact his mom taught him to sail in Currituck Sound and they spent many happy hours together.

David fell in love with flying as a teen ager and through the encouragement of his parents he was working towards his pilot license when he died in a training exercise. He was not piloting the plane when it crashed into the mountain heavily layered with fog. His mom told me it took a long time to release the guilt she felt having allowed him to follow his passion.

The quilting motifs used were the astrology signs of David, his sister, fiancee and mother and I also included a pattern of a house. Around the border of the quilt is a sailboat motif. In the lower left corner you can see it has been turned over to show the label. Next to it is a small felt animal I made for David when he was born and is part of a mobile which hung over his crib. His mother still has the mobile.

David was very close to his sister and the T Shirt images hold special meaning for her since she shared in many of his activities which included tennis. This quilt is owned by his sister and lays on the back of her sofa.
