Profile of fiber artist Martha Borders
Martha, a self taught fiber artist, brings an imaginative approach to her art quilts and fabric collages. Her hand marble cottons and original designs combine to make her beautiful Marble Quilts a reflection of her artistic sensitivity.
"I could easily spend the rest of my life just creating marble fabrics, manipulating fiber, making quilts and hardly ever explore the large area of fiber craft. We have a rich tradition of quiltmaking in this country and I hope to contribute in some way to bringing a modern touch to this tradional fiber art."

Martha has always thought that her fiber art is a reflection of the many places and influences she experienced growing up in diverse locations.Born in Germany while her father served in the US Army, she returned to the United States as a young child and grew up around the country before settling in Connecticut for junior high and high school. Virginia drew her for college where she fell in love and began her family nestled among the Blue Ridge Mountains. She made her first quilt (1974) using her grandmother’s portable Singer Featherweight and stumbled through the process with little knowledge of sewing. Falling in love with the geometric designs and the endless possibilities, she got hooked early on this tradional craft. Always looking for a new way to express art, Martha explored many aspects of quiltmaking and levels of consciousness trying to combine the two. "Beautiful Art taps into an unknown aspect of our spirit and reminds us of the wonders of life still to be explored and enjoyed."
While living on Cape Cod, Martha began exhibiting her quilts in 1985 on a regional and national level . During this time Martha raised a daughter, managed several retail stores, renovated two houses, and became a bank supervisor.
1992 was a turning point for her when she discovered marbling, left her bank job and started quilt making full time. Her work has been exhibited regionally and nationally with awards. She lectured and taught workshops in New England for a number of years.
Martha stopped exhibiting her quilts on a national level in 1997 and now only shows her work on her web site. In 2005 she shows her quilts locally at the annual Glendale quilt guild show. In 2005 she won "Viewers Choice" for her quilt Log Cabin Blues.
