The feathered stars and compass patterns were drafted on my apple computer and then printed out for paper piecing. The trapunto areas featuring feathers was used to soften the strong geometric patterns of the compass and stars. The large center squares of the feathered stars offered a spot to show off some of my favorite marble cottons. When the quilt was finished I splatter painted around the compass areas.

This quilt represents four different ways to change how fabric looks. The techniques marbling, dying, trapunto, and splatter painting combined to create a traditional design with a modern touch. I made this quilt before I became proficient at creating light marble backgrounds. Trapunto is adding extra batting to areas of the quilt top which creates a sculpted look. You can see many areas of trapunto on the white background fabric.
This quilt toured around to many invitational exhibits and won an honorable mention at A Quilter's Gathering- Eastcoast Quilters Alliance 1994
