A cozy feeling of home with the trapunto cabins and a log cabin pattern set in a new way. The warm yellow diamond center gives way to the cool blues of the border on this quilt. The four light colored marble blocks are trapunto with a cabin and spider web design.
21 log cabin blocks were sewn using paper piecing from patterns designed on my computer and then printed out. I used Adobe Illustrator to draw the three different log cabin patterns. I also drew the cabin and spider web design to fit perfectly in the empty blocks. |

When you look at the cabin on the left you will notice that the machine quilting is dense in places to help the trapunto seem to rise up further from the fabric. The delicate purple and blue marble allow the trapunto to be appreciated. Often times if you use trapunto on a fabric with a strong pattern the effect can get lost. |

The picture on the left shows a close up of the lower right corner of the quilt. Notice how the trapunto softens the strong geometric pattern of the log cabin pattern. The dark blue fabrics around the outer edge of the quilt give a sense of containment. I was careful not to use too many dark fabrics which could have easily dominated the design and taken away from the center diamond and trapunto. Unlike traditional log cabin quilts, this quilt has light color centers which add to the color movement from light to dark marble fabrics. |
